The digital media revolution is increasing, fueled by the rapid growth of immersive technologies and proliferation of handheld devices capable of accessing data from virtually anywhere. However, museums have proved slow in catching up and still rely on analog experiences.
To shift this paradigm, a Hackathon will be held during 4-days using the current map exhibition curated by the Rectorate of the University of Porto. NewHorizon Hackathon participants will work in multidisciplinary teams and bring cutting-edge technologies to the museum experience by revisiting the analog maps.

Creative CoLAB NewHorizon is the point where science, technology and art meet to empower people and organizations. Here participants will find experts who are changing the way we interact with reality, taking advantage of the latest digital trends.
This year Cartography, the science and art of map-making, is the baseline of a four day event where participants will be challenged to add a digital media layer to this science. Teaming up with professionals and enthusiasts of different fields, participants will re-invent the Maps exhibition presented at the Rectorate of the University of Porto.
At the same time, NewHorizon holds Talks Sessions devoted to spread ideas and foster knowledge, where digital media, is the link that bonds all topics from science and business to global issues.
The Rectorate of the University of Porto challenges the participants of NewHorizon to make use of its exhibition spaces and the current “Os mapas da Academia” exhibition to explore how emerging interactive technologies can enhance the analog museum-going experience.
In the hackathon, participants will work to develop prototypes that, by aligning the beauty of mapping and cartography with the ubiquity of technology, promote new, innovative and interactive experiences for people of all ages.

An hackathon is a sprint like event where people get together to create a product in a short amount of time. In a truly collaborative setting, hackathons explore new tools and methods of story creation and community building.
What is the goal of the New Horizon Hackaton?
The hackathon is an opportunity for participants to approach problems in order to create novel solutions. NewHorizon hackathon is an excellent opportunity to work in groups of 2-5 individuals, and collaborate with people from different backgrounds to propose and present prototypes that will serve to enhance the museum visitors’ experience.
In the hackathon, participants will work to develop prototypes that, by aligning the beauty of mapping and cartography with the ubiquity of technology, promote new, innovative and interactive experiences for people of all ages.
Where will New Horizon take place?
The event will take place at the Rectory of the University of Porto.
What is the final event all about?
On the last evening of the event (June 28) there will be a free public showing of the projects as part of a final social event. Everyone is welcome, entrance is free.

How are applicants/participants selected?
We are open to all applicants who are who is 18+ years old.
Do I need to know how to code?
No you don’t, but if you’re one, that’s great!
How am I placed in a team? How will my team work?
We try to create collaborative teams by bringing together complementary assets, taking into consideration the hackathon’s scope.
Participation
In order to explore the most out of the array of digital media technologies currently available, participants are expected to bring their own equipment (e.g. film camera, VR hardware, laptops, arduinos, raspberry pi, sensor technologies, BCIs) for the production of the digital media piece to be submitted. We’ll provide as much as we can.
How long is it? Do I have to stay there for the entire Hackathon?
4 days. Once confirmed as a participant you are required to attend the whole event.
Yes. We provide meals, coffee and snacks during the event.
If selected, how can I show that I participated in NewHorizon?
Upon completion of the project, participants will be given a Certificate of Participation that includes the dates of the event, as well as the total amount of hours.
