Forms of collaboration

MIEIC has established over the years a strong partnership with several national and international companies, in particular by:

  • dissertation proposals in a business environment;
  • project proposals for development in courses, namely LGP (Project Management Laboratory);
  • presentation of lectures in classes;
  • promotion of extra-curricular activities such as competitions, conferences, study visits, etc.;
  • proposals for summer internships;
  • grants and awards.

If your company intends to submit collaboration proposals it should follow the following procedures:

Proposals for dissertations/thesis

Companies that intend to receive students in their final dissertation have to pre-enroll in FEUP’s Job Bank by selecting the area of interest “Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering (MIEIC).”

Any company interested in submitting proposals must have human and technical resources that can actually support the student in the informatics area. Proven these conditions, the company is invited twice a year to submit proposals for dissertation topics through our information system and according to a specific form (describing summary, objectives, provisional work plan, application areas, etc. ).
The proposals submitted are evaluated and only those deemed minimally acceptable (in quality and appropriateness of workload) may move to the next phase. The accepted proposals are then disclosed to students who make their choices; these are in turn communicated to the companies and it is expected that at the end, there is consensus (simulating, in a way, what happens in practical life, with announcements, interviews …). All dissertations carried out in a business environment still need a supervisor at FEUP, which will serve as a support to the theoretical preparation of the work.

The execution of the dissertation work is divided into two parts:

  • First semester – theoretical preparation of dissertation work (problem analysis and state of the art), in the  “Dissertation Preparation” course, in part-time (usually in parallel with 4 other courses), normally in the FEUP premises. During this phase, it is not expected that the student is a lot of time in the company but is expected that periodic tripartite meetings (involving the student, supervisor, and company representative) take place.
  • Second semester – realization of the “Dissertation” itself (with the development of contributions) over 20 weeks (term not extensible), in exclusive dedication (students may not have other courses / tasks in parallel), in the company premises.

There are two calls for proposals each year, in September (for Dissertation Preparation in the first semester and Dissertation in the second semester) and February  (for Dissertation Preparation in the second semester and Dissertation in the first semester).

Project proposals for LGP

In the Project Management Laboratory course of the 2nd Semester of the 4th year, students of MIEIC, organized in multi-disciplinary teams (which also integrate students from FEUP’s Master in Multimedia and FBAUP’s Bachelor in Communication Design), carry out projects proposed by companies.

Companies interested in participating should timely contact the conductor of the course or the secretariat of the course via e-mail mieic@fe.up.pt.
