PhD Projects

DoRPE – “Doctoral Research Projects at FEUP with Enterprises”, offers to the companies:

    An opportunity to start a research project with FEUP, involving a PhD candidate and appropriate funding

    Medium- and long-term solutions to research problems relevant to the company

Master’s Projects

The development of Master’s Dissertations in a business environment is a great opportunity for companies and students. A full-time master’s student is able to solve real problems and create innovative solutions during an academic year with advantages for both:

  • the company participates in the elaboration of the research topic as well as in the selection of the student
  • the student works at the company’s facilities for one semester and his work is followed and monitored by a responsible designated by the company in partnership with his advisor at FEUP
  • the course systematizes and simplifies the management of intellectual property resulting from the master’s project
  • the student has the opportunity to experience the work environment and daily routine operations of a company (for many his first experience in the world of work)
  • the student is part of a team and contributes to their success
  • the company has access to young talent

For the submission of a dissertation proposal, the company needs to register in advance on the “Employment Exchange” of FEUP and will thus be included in the call to submit proposals made once or twice a year, depending on the Master’s Degree.

    <LGP – Linking Great Partners>

     

    LGP is a living laboratory where students from different courses develop and practice project management and business skills. It is the cradle of new ideas, products and projects, an example of a true connection between academia and society.

    Companies are invited to propose projects that they would like to subcontract, students develop and sell the products to their “customers”. This is the dynamics of LGP.

    Companies have a good opportunity to have:

    • A prototype of a software product developed in a short period of time
    • Access to young talent and contact with their skills: a semester of regular interaction with 10 or more students (computer engineering, multimedia, software engineering, industrial management and communication design)
    • Visibility with our talent: through challenges, technologies and lectures
    • Interaction with a group of teachers

    <Social Impact>

    Coding for Social Impact Labs

    Program for Social Impact is an initiative with the aim of creating close collaborations between social innovators, from anywhere in the world, and students from the software development laboratory curriculum unit (LDSO/MIEIC).

    The projects that arise from these collaborations aim to build simple software systems through agile development best practices, which can leverage ideas with high social impact. Teams of 5/6 students work 8 hours a week for 12 weeks and deliver concrete systems with the maturity of a fully functional prototype.

    In addition to these laboratories, the Coding for Social Impact project offers the younger ones (12 to 18 years old) an opportunity to have a first contact with programming through programming demystification workshops, where they contact Python, Minecraft PE, Raspberry PI, Sense HAT…

    The student explores the world of technology and simultaneously thinks as a digital maker, a thought process that sustains computing and digital production: formulate a problem and express its solution in such a way that a computer can actually accomplish it.

    By progressing through programming, electronics, design, construction and teamwork, the student develops this method of thinking in a natural way, beginning to question the operation of all devices, thinking of solutions to problems in a pragmatic way and, above all, using technology to overcome obstacles!

    Workshops U.Júnior

    The Junior University of U.Porto is the largest national program of initiation to the university environment for students of primary (2nd and 3rd cycles) and high school. These students have an opportunity to get to know the fourteen faculties of U.Porto, a business school (Porto Business School) and several research units, in areas as diverse as science, technologies, humanities, arts or sport.
    The DEI participates in all editions of this initiative, through workshops offered to students visiting the Faculty of Engineering. 

    With the help of monitors (computer students) and teachers of the EIO, interesting workshops are offered that awakens younger ones’ curiosity and often reveal themselves as drivers of the decision to enter higher education in the area of informatics.
    “Hackathon: Smart Ideas”, “Come program your 8-bit video game!”, “Three-dimensional modeling of objects”, “Programming is easy!” were some of the workshops offered to dozens of young people curious by Computer Engineering.

    LGP Projects

    LGP (Project Management Laboratory – curricular unit) is a living laboratory where students of computer engineering, multimedia, software engineering, industrial management and communication design, develop software products for real companies.
    In all editions of LGP there is a concern to choose social projects, where the talent of our students is placed at the disposal of ideas that aim at a social end, in line with the mission of social responsibility of the CED.

    An application that assists in the identification of devoluted buildings in the city of Porto, a platform that promotes the ‘gamification’ of learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), an application that provides elderly users with a digital experience while promoting physical and mental exercise, an application that aims to help identify landowners in need of cleaning in order to prevent forest fires are just some of the projects developed in this highly competitive curricular unit motivated by social needs and to which students proudly devote themselves.


    Solidarity activity in Vermilhas

    In 2018, the DEI chose as the venue for its annual Workshop, Tondela, a municipality badly affected by the 2017 fires that marked the end of a calamitous summer in forest and human and animal life. As part of this meeting, the DeI joined montis- Association of Nature Conservation, and participated in a voluntary activity where, together with members of the association, teachers and collaborators of the secretariat carried out actions of cleaning and opening / maintenance of access and maintenance of the ripícola gallery in one of the land managed by Montis, in Vermilhas (Vouzela).

    Simultaneously, another group met at the Municipality of Tondela where DEI discussed ways to collaborate with the city and from which came the project “Floresta Segura”, described in “LGP Projects”..

    Solidarity with Mozambique 2019

    In solidarity with the Mozambican people who were severely buffeted by floods in 2019, the DeI joined the Oporto University campaign “U.Porto solidarity with Mozambique” and the department launched the campaign “We will not do Nestum”.

    With everyone’s contribution a substantial amount of money was raised and allowed the purchase of water purification tablets, milk powder, dairy and non-dairy porridges, cloth diapers and cotton blankets. Food, bandages and bedding were also given. All these goods were delivered to Helpoa Non-Governmental Organization for Development, which worked on the ground in the maternal and child area.

    COVID-19

    In an unprecedented move to mobilize the community, U.Porto, in partnership with the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP), launched itself in the production of visor supports by 3D printing for the protection of health professionals in hospital centers and health centers in the north of the country.

    The DEI has associated itself with this cause and, with the help of some volunteers, produced hundreds of visors and mask straps to help in this initiative to demonstrate great generosity and a sense of mission of the academic community. 

    Also , in April 2020,the Dissertation of the Integrated Master in Computer Engineering and Computing development is ongoing.
