<contributing to the informatics engineering of the future>
Informatics and Computing Engineering has increasingly contributed to society and directly or indirectly changed how we live. Directly by its presence in services and devices that perform computing and use software as one of the main components. Indirectly by contributing to the development of innovative products and services that impact our society in all areas of knowledge.
The Department of Informatics Engineering (DEI) was created in January 2008, following the activities that had been developed at FEUP since the beginning of the 1990s. DEI carries out scientific research in the scope of Informatics and Computing Engineering and emphasizes the future of this field. In technical-scientific terms, it stands out for its multidisciplinarity and for adopting the teaching of soft skills to train highly valued and highly qualified human resources specialized in the various areas of Informatics and Computing Engineering.
Mission
Provide world-class education in Computer Engineering, in scientific, technical, ethical and cultural aspects.
Carry out research and development of excellence for the progress of Computer Science, and support training activities in Computer Engineering.
Vision
DEI's vision is to retain and strengthen its advanced position in Computer Science and Engineering teaching and research in the national context and to assert itself in the ranking of the best schools/departments in Europe.
Quality
The quality of the education is witnessed by the Alumni community and its contributions to the country and the world.
There are many former students who are now leaders in companies and institutions, authentic success stories that carry the DEI-FEUP DNA, through their innovative and entrepreneurial spirits and great human dimension.
DEI is proud to attract some of the best students in Computer Engineering in Portugal and also many international students. It is equally proud to collaborate with other departments of FEUP and other Faculties of the U.PORTO and to have very dynamic student associations with extremely relevant extracurricular activities, contributing to distinct and unique training paths.
Along with training young future leaders in the various areas of Informatics and Computing Engineering and investing in research of recognized quality, DEI has always fostered the liaison with Industry. The relationships of trust and cooperation with many companies are well established, and many of them have accompanied the department since its creation. DEI is proud to maintain a close relationship with the Industry and other national and international entities. This proximity facilitates knowledge transfer and keeping up with companies' technology and human resources needs, thus ensuring win-win relationships that both parties highly value. This relationship has also given rise to research projects aligned with present and future needs and true living laboratories for experimenting with future technologies.
It is, therefore, frequent that those seeking collaborations and training in the various sub-areas of Informatics and Computing Engineering turn to DEI!
